AkzoNobel and Axalta End Merger Discussions Without Agreement

AkzoNobel N.V. (OTCMKTS:AKZOY) and Axalta Coating Systems (NYSE:AXTA) announced this afternoon that they have ended their discussion into a possible merger without an agreement to combine the companies.

Philadelphia Collision Repair Shop Owner Ordered to Pay Over $285,000 in Collected Sales Tax

A Philadelphia collision repair shop operator recently was ordered to pay $285,908.71 to the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue after he failed to remit sales tax that he collected at his collision repair facility, Revenue Secretary Dan Hassell announced November 21.

Edward A. Hildebrandt III, 48, the owner and operator of the defunct University Collision Center, Inc., also was ordered to serve seven years of probation when he was sentenced by Philadelphia Judge Carolyn Nichols.

 “This was money collected in trust and owed to Pennsylvania,” Hassell said. “Failing to pay those taxes is a crime that hurts all Pennsylvanians.”

Small Business Optimism Maintained High Level in October

NFIB Optimism Index inches up in October as more owners expect better sales and say it’s a good time to expand.

Clayton, Dubilier & Rice Acquire 40% Stake in Belron

D’Ieteren, the automotive company and parent of Belron, and Clayton, Dubilier & Rice (CD&R), the global private investment firm, announced Sunday that they have entered into exclusive discussions under which CD&R-managed funds would acquire a 40 percent ownership interest in the Belron group, the global vehicle glass repair and replacement company and parent of Safelite Auto Glass.

The Collision Centers of New York Raises Funds for National Breast Cancer Foundation

The Collision Centers (TCC) of New York celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness month in October by partnering with National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to spread awareness and raise funds.

The NBCF puts much of their focus on helping with early detection of possible cancer cells, and treatment for those who have been diagnosed. They have programs centered on disease education for patients and loved ones and providing free mammograms and diagnostic services nationwide to women who are unable to afford them. They also help patients understand and deal with the health care system to ensure proper care and treatment.

Collision Repair Industry Production Down Slightly in August

After achieving record levels of production, production declined slightly in August compared to July, but was up versus 2016.

An analysis of the latest data released from the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), shows that total production for the collision repair industry in August declined slightly from the record levels it had been achieving over the previous few months.

The industry’s total production, which we define as the total average weekly hours per month multiplied by the total number of production and non-supervisory workers employed each month, was 7.55 million man hours per week in August,

AASP-MN Adds Additional Venue for January 9-11 Race for Automotive Education

October Wholesale Used Vehicles Down from September

Wholesale prices remain above previous year levels.

According to the ADESA Analytical Services’ monthly analysis of wholesale used vehicle prices, the average wholesale prices in October were down only modestly month-over-month and were up year-over-year, bolstered by lingering impacts from hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

Generally, lower used vehicle prices increase pressure on the number of total losses impacting the collision repair industry, while rising prices allow for more collision repair work to be performed prior to a vehicle being declared a total loss.

Service King To Open New Collision Repair Center in Dallas-Fort Worth Market in December

Volvo Announces Agreement to Supply “Tens of Thousands” of Autonomous Cars to Uber

Volvo Cars today announced it has signed an agreement with Uber, the ride sharing company, to sell tens of thousands of autonomous driving (AD) compatible base vehicles between 2019 and 2021.

The base vehicles are developed on Volvo Cars’ modular, in-house developed Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). SPA is currently used on Volvo Cars’ 90 series cars as well as on the new XC60 midsize SUV.

Fix Auto UK Adds Two Collision Repair Centers to Network

Fix Auto UK announced the addition of two collision repair centers to its network of independently-owned facilities. Both facilities, one in Scotland and the other on the Isle of Wight, are additional locations opened by existing network members.

Serial Litigant Permanently Enjoined From Filing Frivolous ADA Lawsuits in Arizona

Small business in Arizona that have been the targets of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) litigation may see some relief. Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich announced a serial litigant organization will soon be permanently barred from filing frivolous disability lawsuits against Arizona businesses. The settlement comes after Judge David M. Talamante dismissed more than 1,000 lawsuits filed by Advocates for Individuals with Disabilities (AID).

Zenith Education Group Closing Wyotech Campuses

Collision repair programs in Wyoming, Pennsylvania will close.

The Zenith Education Group (Zenith) announced that WyoTech campuses in Laramie, Wyo., Blairsville, Pa. and Daytona Beach, Fla. will cease enrolling new students and be taught out, providing existing student the opportunity to complete their programs. In addition, Zenith will reach out to local educational institutions, nonprofit organizations and community groups to inquire if there is interest in using their existing facilities within their communities.

Donny Seyfer Named Executive Officer of NASTF

The National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) named Industry veteran Donny Seyfer to replace retiring Skip Potter as NASTF Executive Officer.

Seyfer brings more than 30 years’ experience as a technician, shop owner/manager, trainer and 15 years of association and trade show experience to the role. Seyfer has served on several NASTF teams including co-chairing the tool and equipment team as well as serving as a member of the board of directors.

When Potter announced his retirement August of 2017, the NASTF Board tapped Seyfer to act as interim director and made the decision October 31st to offer him the position after an extensive search for Potter’s successor.

“This is the perfect platform to expand and continue my mission to help those of us who turn the wrench or wield the scan tool. Most important to the NASTF mission is the opportunity to continue to connect all of the different channels of our amazing industry and make the world a little smaller. Registration Open for National Auto Body Council Palm Springs Golf Fundraiser

Registration is now open for the National Auto Body Council’s (NABC) 2018 golf fundraiser.

Golfers prepare for the shotgun start at last year’s NABC Golf Outing that was held in Palm Springs, Calif. in January. Registration is now open for next year’s outing being held Wednesday, January 17, 2018.
