Service King and Collision Repair Education Foundation Announce Grant in Honor of Mario Malacara

The Collision Repair Education Foundation (CREF) is administering a new grant, called The Service King Way Grant: In Honor of Mario Malacara on behalf of Service King Collision Repair Centers.

Malacara was a highly admired and respected 14-year Service King teammate who tragically passed away in December 2016. The Service King Way Grant was created in memory of Malacara’s dedicated service, loyalty to the industry and the indelible impact he had on countless people during his career.

AASP-MN Announces OSHA Workshop, Body Shop Session in October

On October 10, the Alliance of Automotive Service Providers of Minnesota (AASP-MN) will host a free OSHA Workplace Safety Consultation Workshop. The workshop, “Hazard Communication and MN Employee Right-to-Know for Auto Shops,” will be held at Lake Superior College in Duluth from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. The session will cover mandatory requirements for Hazard Communication and Employee Right-to-Know (ERTK) programs and training applicable to the automotive industry. Attendees will also receive a template for developing written Hazard Communication and ERTK programs.

The session is free, but pre-registration is required. A registration flyer is available to download.

Traffic Volume Growth Slows in June

June vehicle traffic growth rate 55 percent lower than May. Traffic volume up 1.2 percent for the month.

Travel volume in June continued to grow following the rebound in April and May. The growth is continuing the trend of increased driving that supports increasing collision repair industry volume and auto physical damage insurance claims across the U.S.

Travel for the month of June is estimated at 280.9 billion vehicle miles nationwide according to the most recent data released by the Federal Highway Administration.

June’s traffic volume represents an increase of 1.2 percent or 3.4 billion vehicle miles over June 2016.

Enterprise Disaster Relief Aid Grows to $3 Million in 2017

The Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Enterprise Rent-A-Car brand, announced it has pledged $750,000 to the American Red Cross and $250,000 to Americares. This $1 million donation follows the devastation left behind by Hurricane Irma and will assist with relief efforts in the Southeast U.S. and Caribbean.

The donation is is in addition to the $1 million the Foundation gave to support Hurricane Harvey relief in late August as well as a $1 million gift to the American Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program (ADGP) made earlier this year. This funding brings Enterprise’s support for disaster relief

Collision Repair Education Foundation Announces Fix Auto USA Tim Clark Memorial Scholarship Recipients

Trucks Continue to Help Wholesale Used Vehicle Prices in August

Fix Auto Canada Adds Collision Repair Center to Network in Kamloops

Copart Reports 13.8 percent Revenue Increase in Fiscal Fourth Quarter

Copart, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPRT) reported financial results for the quarter and year ended July 31, 2017.

For the three months ended July 31, 2017, revenue was $378.6 million, an increase of $45.9 million, or 13.8 percent versus the same quarter last year. Gross margin, and net income were, $167.5 million, and $70.3 million, respectively. These represent an increase in in gross margin of $26.0 million, or 18.4 percent; and a decrease in net income of $13.8 million, or 16.4 percent, respectively, from the same quarter last year.

Fully diluted earnings per share for the three months were $0.30 compared to $0.35

Auto Care Association Petitions for Expanded Copyright Exemption for Vehicle Repair

Calls for the U.S. Copyright Office to expand consumer exemption in Digital Millenium Copyright Act to include repair service providers.

The Auto Care Association has submitted a petition with the U.S. Copyright Office to expand the current exemption provided to consumers under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) when accessing encrypted software for the purpose of vehicle repair. The association issued a petition in July requesting a renewal of the current exemption, which expires this year, but there remains a concern that the exemption only covers consumer access to software. Currently, it does not cover third parties that require access

Refinish Paint Distributor Fined for VOC Violations in Ontario, Canada

Environment and Climate Change Canada’s (ECCC) announced that Fine Auto Paints and Supplies Ltd. of Scarborough, Ontario, was fined $25,000, after pleading guilty in the Ontario Court of Justice on September 13, to one count of contravening the Volatile Organic Compound Concentration Limits for Automotive Refinishing Products Regulations, under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999. The fine will be directed to the Environmental Damages Fund (EDF).

An investigation by ECCC enforcement officers revealed that the company had sold automotive refinishing products that contained Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in excess of the allowable limit.

IIHS and HLDI Announce New President

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute announced that Dr. David L. Harkey will become the next president of the two traffic safety research organizations in January 2018. Harkey will succeed Dr. Adrian K. Lund, who is retiring after serving as IIHS-HLDI president since 2006.

Dr. David L. Harkey, shown speaking at a roundtable on truck underride hosted by IIHS on Aug. 29, has been named the new president of IIHS and HLDI.

Harkey, 54, has directed the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center since 2006 and has more than 30 years’ experience

CAPA Launches Updated Online Complaint Form

The Certified Automotive Parts Association (CAPA) announced the release of an updated online complaint form. In response to market feedback, users now have the ability to upload and submit complaint part photos through CAPA’s website.

“CAPA continually monitors the quality of parts certified to the CAPA standard and is pro-active in soliciting industry feedback through the Quality Complaint Program.  This is an important tool for investigating certified parts which do not meet customer expectations,” said Deborah Klouser, CAPA’s Director of Operations.   “We encourage repair shops and all other stakeholders to report any complaints about CAPA Certified parts to CAPA.”

Small Business Optimism Remains Strong in August

Surge in capital spending and high sales expectations keeps NFIB Index at near record level

The percentage of small business owners planning to make capital expenditures in the next three to six months reached its highest level since 2006, according to the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Index of Small Business Optimism.
