ASA Installs Board of Directors at Annual Business Meeting

The Automotive Service Association (ASA) held its 2017 Annual Meeting at The Magnolia Hotel in Denver, April 24-26. The three-day annual meeting opened with a Welcome Party for attendees sponsored by Federated Insurance, an ASA Sponsored Benefit Provider, and included open and closed Board meetings, affiliate directors’ conference, a Recognition Night and networking events. Following the open Board meeting, the new chairman and Board members were sworn in for the 2017-2018 year.

Rhode Island to Hold Meeting on Auto Damage Appraiser Regulations

May 30 meeting to focus on regulations governing when an appraiser may not leave a collision repair facility without providing a copy of a damage appraisal.

The Rhode Island Department of Business Regulation (DBR), Insurance Division has issued a notice of proposed rulemaking in response to a petition to update Rhode Island Regulation 42 Section 7E to clarify the language  governing when an appraiser may not leave a copy of their appraisal prior to leaving a collision repair facility.

Service King Acquires Three Location MSO in Sacramento, California Market

AkzoNobel Rejects Third Offer from PPG

I-CAR Announces Changes to Class Cancellation Policy

Effective May 1, training organization is cancelling classes with fewer than three registered students. Students will be allowed to register for next available class or employer can request a private event.

The Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) today announced a new live course cancellation policy that was put into effect last week.

Under the new policy, I-CAR instructors will receive a warning four days in advance of a class that it has less than three students registered. Local research will begin to determine if one or two additional students in the area would benefit from completing the class.

State Farm to Consolidate Facilities

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company announced plans last week to exit eleven facilities in stages over the course of several years, beginning in 2018. The work from these facilities will move to the company’s headquarters in Bloomington, Ill., its offices in Atlanta, Dallas, and Phoenix, as well as a number of existing locations across the U.S. These changes will affect approximately 4,200 of the company’s nearly 70,000 employees. Uni-Select Reports Sales Up 12.6% in First Quarter

Uni-Select Inc. (TSE:UNS), the parent of FinishMaster, reported its financial results for the first quarter ended March 31. The company reported $297.2 million in sales, up 12.6 percent. According to the company, the increase was driven by the sales generated mainly from recent U.S. business acquisitions, resulting in additional sales of $44.5 million or 16.8 percent. The organic sales were affected, as expected, by the product line changeover in the FinishMaster US segment while the Canadian Automotive Group was affected by a loss of an independent member. Without these impacts, the organic growth would have been positive.

Auto Care Association Warns on Auto Repair Cost Increase from Proposed Border Adjustment Tax to Cost

The Auto Care Association warned lawmakers yesterday that the proposed Border Adjustment Tax (BAT) on imports would significantly increase auto repair and maintenance costs for the average car owner in the United States.

The BAT, which would impose a new 20 percent tax on imported goods and services, would result in a $20 billion per year tax increase on automotive parts. For the average family, this would mean a $160 increase in annual auto repair and maintenance costs, to about $1100 per year, according to an analysis of the tax conducted by the Auto Care Association. Independent Collision Repair Facility Population Decreased Slightly in 2015

Latest data from U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reverses trend of independent collision repair facility population growth that started in 2012.

The latest available data from the U.S. Census Bureau County Business Patterns annual research series covering 2015 shows that the number of independent collision repair businesses with payroll decreased slightly in 2015 after three years of growth from 2012-2014. The number of independent collision repair facilities with payroll was 33,648 in 2015, down 161 from 33,809 in 2014. The number of independent establishments stands at 262 or 0.8 percent above the 2011 low of 33,386.

Tesla to Open Company-Owned Body Shops
