The Automotive Service Association of Massachusetts & Rhode Island (ASA-MARI) is sponsoring a “Guess the Score” contest that is open to members and non-members alike. Whoever correctly predicts the final score of the game between the New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, February 4, will win a full year of membership to ASA-MARI. If an existing member wins the prediction contest, they will have their next year’s dues paid by the association.

California Collision Repair Anti-Steering and Labor Rate Bill Dies in Committee

After failing to advance out of committee, the legislation officially died at the end of January.

After failing to advance out of a hearing on January 18 of the California Assembly Appropriations Committee, Assembly Bill 1679 (AB 1679) officially died on January 31.

The bill sought to overturn California Department of Insurance (CDI) anti-steering and collision repair labor rate regulations that took effect in March 2017.

The legislation was introduced last year by Assemblywoman Autumn Burke. The bill, as amended, would reverse key provisions of both the anti-steering and labor rate regulations that were adopted by the California

People’s Insurance Company of China Provides Its First CAPA Certified Collision Repair Parts

The Certified Automotive Parts Association (CAPA) announced that the People’s Insurance Company of China Limited (Group – PICC Property & Casualty Ltd.), the largest property and casualty insurer in China, recently made over 150 CAPA Certified part numbers available. PICC concurrently announced the establishment of their e-commerce platform to facilitate distribution of these parts in China. The certified part types include hoods, fenders, grilles, and bumper covers.

In November 2016, CAPA and PICC were joined by the China Automotive Maintenance and Repair Association (CAMRA) collision repair committee, and Intertek Shanghai, the certification body of the CAPA program in China,

Traffic Volume Increased in November

November traffic grew 1.1 percent for the month compared to 2016.

Travel volume in November continued to increase, though at a smaller rate than experienced in the U.S. in recent years. The growth is continuing the trend of increased driving that supports higher collision repair industry volume and auto physical damage insurance claims across the U.S.

Travel for the month of November is estimated at 261.4 billion vehicle miles nationwide according to the most recent data released by the Federal Highway Administration.

Iowa Insurance Commissioner to Speak at Midwest Auto Body Trade Show

Iowa Insurance Commissioner, Doug Ommen, has accepted the invitation to speak Saturday, February 17 at the General Session at the Midwest Auto Body Trade Show. This will be the first time, Commisioner Ommen will have the opportunity to meet many Iowans from the automotive aftermarket industry.  Scott Weiser, Iowa Collision Repair Association Lobbyist, facilitated Commissioner Ommen’s attendance.

AASP/NJ Board Member William “Billy” Aiello Passes Away

William “Billy” Aiello, 47 of South Plainfield, N.J. passed away surrounded by his family January 30, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick.

William “Billy” Aiello, AASP/NJ Board Member, passed away January 30 at age 47.

Aiello was elected to the Alliance of Automotive Service Providers on NJ (AASP/NJ) Board of Directors in October 2017.

Aiello is survived by his wife Kara (Kaskiw) Aiello, his daughter Brooke, his parents Phil and Rae Aiello, his sister Dana Clayton and her husband Robert, his sister Patty Aiello, cherished son Billy Aiello Jr., grandmothers Pat West and Juanita Aiello, a very special Uncle Neal and Aunt Mare Aiello, the entire Van Woeart and Parisio families, nieces and nephew Brianna, Justin, and Sofia Clayton and Gianna Aiello, father and mother-in-law Michael and Hala Kaskiw, admired sister-in-law Kelli Kaskiw and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 2 from 3-7 p.m. at the Chubenko Funeral Home in 625 Port Reading Avenue in Port Reading, N.J. Services on Saturday are private at the request of the family.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations online in Billy’s memory for a trust fund to be established in Brooke’s name.

PPG Foundation Funds Refinish Scholarships through Collision Repair Education Foundation

The PPG Foundation has provided $20,000 in funding for the Collision Repair Education Foundation that will be awarded to students who have demonstrated a career interest in automotive collision repair and refinish. The scholarships, $5,000 each, are awarded annually to full-time students attending a post-secondary school with a focus on degree programs in collision repair. The funds may be used to assist the students with educational expenses as tuition, books, tools, and equipment. Scholarship award winners will be announced later this spring.

Indiana Senate Approves Amended Bill Placing Anti-Steering Restrictions on Collision Repairers and Insurers

AASP-MN Automotive Scholarship Applications Open

The Alliance of Automotive Service Providers of Minnesota (AASP-MN) will be awarding scholarships to select students enrolled in post-secondary mechanical or collision repair programs. Scholarship awards will be $1,000 per student and can be applied towards tuition or tool purchases.

Recipients must be entering their first or second year of a two-year NATEF-certified automotive program in the fall of 2018. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of industry representatives, with consideration given to scholastic achievement, education and career goals, financial need and written recommendations.

Applications must be postmarked no later than March 31.

Nationwide Announces Venture Capital Investment to Build Safe Driving Network

New Vehicle Retail Sales Pace to Decline in January

For the second consecutive year, the new vehicle retail sales pace in January is expected to fall from year-ago levels, according to a forecast developed jointly by J.D. U.S. Property/Casualty Insurance Industry Reports $22.4 Billion Net Income

Net income dropped 30.3 Percent in first nine months of 2017 following hurricanes and other catastrophe losses.

The private U.S. property/casualty insurance industry saw its net income after taxes drop to $22.4 billion in the first nine-months of 2017 from $32.1 billion in the first nine-months of 2016-a 30.3 percent decline-and its overall profitability as measured by its annualized rate of return on average policyholders’ surplus fall to 4.2 percent from 6.3 percent, according to ISO, a Verisk (NASDAQ:VRSK) business, and the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI).
