Jason Levine Named Executive Director of the Center for Auto Safety

The Center for Auto Safety, the non-profit organization providing consumers a voice for auto safety, quality, and fuel economy, announced the appointment of Jason K. Levine as its new Executive Director. Mr. Levine succeeds the late Clarence M. Ditlow III.

Levine, a consumer protection attorney, has held leadership positions in three federal agencies, including Chief of Staff at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Director of the Office of Congressional, Legislative, and Intergovernmental Affairs at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM).

Toyota Pilot Testing Car Sharing Platform in Hawaii

New suite of software and services designed to enable dealers and distributors to launch car share programs in local markets

Toyota and Servco Pacific Inc. have partnered to test a new car-sharing technology in Honolulu, Hawaii. The suite of software and services is an important part of Toyota’s Mobility Services Platform (MSPF) which will offer various functions to enable a more convenient mobility experience. When the employee-only pilot testing program concludes, Servco, the distributor of Toyota vehicles in Hawaii, will use the car-sharing technology to launch a new Honolulu-based car share business by the end of 2017.

UTI Expands Welding Technology Program to Arizona Campus

Former CARSTAR Training Center in Kansas Now Locally-Owned and Operated Collision Repair Center

CARSTAR announced that CARSTAR Metcalf in Stillwell, Kan., its former corporate training center, is now locally-owned and operated.

“We have direct repair relationships with more than 20 insurance partners,” said Steve Hahn, CARSTAR Metcalf owner. “Now that this location is locally owned, I want to be even more involved in the community.”

Hahn said he is planning an open house in October. “Without the support of the CARSTAR corporate operations team the last four years, purchasing this shop would not have been possible,” said Hahn.

National Safety Council Sees Decline in Motor Vehicle Deaths

Motor vehicle deaths projected to drop slightly in first half of 2017 but remain 8 Percent higher than at the two years ago.

Preliminary estimates from the National Safety Council indicate motor vehicle deaths in the first six months of 2017 are 1 percent lower than they were during the same six-month period in 2016. However, the country is fresh off the steepest estimated two-year increase in motor vehicle deaths since 1964, and it is too early to conclude whether the upward trend is over.

National Auto Body Council Opens Nominations for Board of Directors

The National Auto Body Council (NABC) announced it is now accepting nominations for seven open seats for its Board of Directors. Deadline for nominations is Friday, September 1.

Board candidates may be self-nominated or an industry professional nominated by three members of the NABC.  To qualify, the nominee must be either an individual member of the National Auto Body Council or the designated representative of a company member. Board members are elected for three-year terms.

All nominations must be submitted in writing. The election will take place at NABC’s upcoming Annual Meeting on Wednesday, November 1 at the SEMA Conference

Plenham Appoints Moseley as CEO

Jason Moseley has been appointed as the new chief executive officer at Plenham Ltd., publishers of bodyshop magazine in the UK and producers of the International Bodyshop Industry Symposium (IBIS) conferences, effective October 19.

Last week it was announced that Moseley recently resigned from his role as director of the National Body Repair Association in the UK.

EPA, DOT Open Comment Period on Reconsideration of GHG Standards for Cars and Light Trucks

NSF Launches Tire Pressure Monitoring System Registration

NSF International has registered its first tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensors, made by Standard Motor Products, Inc., through NSF’s new TPMS registration program, TPMS sensors are tested to federal motor vehicle regulations while working with a vehicle’s on-board systems to warn drivers when a tire is dangerously underinflated.  

To earn NSF International registration, Standard Motor Products’ TPMS sensors met the following requirements:

  • Compliance with FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) 138. Testing is performed on a vehicle for each protocol and for each sensor.
  • Functionality and performance testing including accurate location reporting, sensor accuracy, low pressure warning repeatability
