Axalta Acquires Swiss Spies Hecker Distributor

Axalta Coating Systems (NYSE:AXTA) announced it has signed an agreement to acquire CH Coatings AG, an importer and distributor throughout Switzerland of Spies Hecker, one of Axalta’s refinish brands, in addition to Axalta’s line of industrial coatings and powder coatings.

Traffic Volume Up 0.8% in March

Blizzard in Northeast led to decline in traffic for the month in the region. Other regions see increases.

Travel data in March continued the trend of increased driving that has led to the growth in both auto physical damage insurance claims and collision repair industry volume across the U.S. Travel for the month of March is estimated at 272 billion vehicle miles nationwide according to the most recent data released by the Federal Highway Administration.

March’s traffic volume represents an increase of just 0.8 percent or 2.2 billion vehicle miles over March 2016.

Mitchell Clarifies Collision Repair Labor Times Do Not Include Diagnostic Scanning

Mitchell announced two enhancements to its collision repair estimating solutions to clarify issues related to scanning and diagnostics.

The first enhancement clarifies that the stated labor times in Mitchell Estimating do not include labor time specifically related to diagnostic scanning. The current release of the Mitchell Estimating solution will include updated Procedure Pages noting that labor times do not include:

  • Time required to aim, calibrate, diagnose, re-set or scan electrical items.
  • Time required to perform pre-repair and post-repair scan operations.
  • The time required for these procedures is in addition to the stated labor times.

Auto Care Association and Coalition for Auto Repair Equality Concerned Vehicle Manufacturers Will Comply with Massachusetts Right to Repair Act

Expanded Model Year 2018 requirements include OEM diagnostic and repair software access using industry standard interfaces.

The Auto Care Association and Coalition for Auto Repair Equality (CARE) are concerned that all vehicle manufacturers will be in compliance with new Right to Repair requirements that will take effect for 2018 and later model year vehicles in Massachusetts. The statement came at a hearing being held at the Massachusetts State House by the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure.

A bill before the committee, House Bill 2784, seeks to authorize an investigation  by the Office of Consumer Affairs and Business

According to the UK-Based Insurance Research body, average repair bills have increased by 32% over the last three years due to increasingly complex repairs.

Thatcham Research is today delivering a call to action for vehicle manufacturers to urgently engage with the repair industry to halt spiraling costs. According to Thatcham, the motor insurer’s automotive research center in the United Kingdom, the average repair bill has risen by nearly 32 percent in the last three years to £1,678 ($2164), and concerns are mounting around core repair challenges encompassing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), new materials and a lack of skills.

Insurance Association Concerned with Mississippi AG’s Consumer Guide to Insurance and Auto Body Repair Misleads Customers

Property Casualty Insurers Association concerned language on replacement parts in guide may confuse consumers and collision repair shops.

The Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) is concerned that the Consumer Guide to Insurance and Auto Body Repair released on May 25 by Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood may confuse and mislead both consumers and collision repair facilities.

ASA Urges Ohio Collision Repairers to Contact Legislators on Budget Amendment on Non-OEM Parts Disclosure

The Automotive Service Association (ASA) is urging collision repairers in Ohio to contact legislators over an amendment proposed for the Ohio budget legislation that would exempt insurers from providing notice to customers when non-OEM parts are used in a repair.

Supreme Court Decision Delivers Victory for Aftermarket on Patents

In what the Auto Care Association calls a “major victory for the auto care industry.” the Supreme Court upheld the legal precedent of patent exhaustion, which states that a company’s right to protect its patent ends when the product is sold to the end user.

Information from an amicus brief submitted to the Supreme Court by the Association was used by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. in reversing a Federal Circuit decision that the Association was concerned would have been damaging to the manufacture and sales of aftermarket parts as well as independently remanufactured or rebuilt components.

Solera Proposes Sale of E3 Technical in UK to Satisfy Competition Authorities Concerns on Autodata Acquisition

UK Authority will consider proposal to divest technical information provider to preserve competition.

The United Kingdom Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced yesterday that it is considering proposals from Solera to overcome competition concerns over its January acquisition of Autodata. According to the CMA, Solera has proposed to sell E3 Technical, which is part of CarweB, to a buyer approved by the CMA.
