Small Business Optimism Index Down Slightly in December

Florida Insurers Identify Assignment of Benefits Abuse and Auto Safety as Top Legislative Priorities

The Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI) called on the Florida Legislature to address assignment of benefits (AOB) abuse and distracted driving as top priorities for the 2018 Florida Legislative Session.

PCI believes AOB reform should be a central part of any discussion of hurricane preparedness and response this session, as Florida was battered by Hurricane Irma, which brought intense wind and rain that caused significant damage and flooding.

“Widespread storm damage creates opportunities for unscrupulous contractors to prey on storm victims who unwittingly sign over their insurance benefits,” said Logan McFaddin, PCI regional manager.

Indiana Collision Repair Anti-Steering Bill Scheduled for Hearing January 11

Indiana Senate Bill 164 (SB 164) that seeks to place anti-steering restriction on both collision repair facilities and insurers is on the agenda for the Senate Insurance and Financial Institutions Committee meeting this Thursday, January 11.

As our January 3 article explained, the legislation seeks to define and prohibit several practices by both collision repair facilities and insurance companies that affect their relationships with customers. For example, it would make it illegal for repair facilities to coerce or intimidate the insured or claimant to boycott an insurer’s drive-in claim center or similar facility. California Bill Would Require All New Vehicles to Be Zero Emission by 2040

A bill introduced in California by Assembly member Phil Ting, AB 1745, the Clean Cars 2040 Act, would require all new passenger vehicles sold in the state after January 1, 2040 to be zero emissions.

Consumer Trust in Autonomous Vehicles on the Rise Globally

Consumers are warming up to the concept of fully self-driving vehicles, but some roadblocks may lay ahead for automakers, according to the 2018 Deloitte Global Automotive Consumer Study.

Consumers have a brighter outlook on the safety of autonomous vehicles, though concerns remain. Significantly fewer people in the 2018 study feel that autonomous cars will not be safe, with less than half (47 percent) of U.S. consumers holding this view — a dramatic decrease from 2017, when 74 percent felt autonomous vehicles would not be safe.

This view is consistent with other countries covered in the study, including: South Korea

New Name for Automotive Training Managers Council

Michael Conway Appointed Interim Colorado Insurance Commissioner

The Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) Executive Director and Colorado Insurance Commissioner Marguerite Salazar announced that Michael Conway has been selected by Gov. John Hickenlooper to serve as interim Colorado Insurance Commissioner, effective January 1, 2018. As Insurance Commissioner, Conway will also head the Division of Insurance (DOI), part of DORA.
