PPG Opens New Refinishing Training Center in Argentina

PPG (NYSE:PPG) announces the opening of the Automotive Refinishing Training Center in Argentina. The premises, equipped with state-of-the-art technology, are prepared to train more than 300 professionals per year. The expectation is that 200 technicians, painters, workshop owners and counter staff experts will be trained at the Center during 2017.

Now, in addition to the Argentines themselves, Chileans and Uruguayans will have another alternative to receive training that was, previously in the interior of the state of São Paulo, Brazil.

Boyd Group Reports Second Quarter Sales Up 16%

Same store sales up 3.4 percent

Boyd Group Income Fund (TSE:BYD.UN) today reported its financial results for the three and six-month periods ended June 30.

Sales increased by 16.0 percent to CA$384.0 million ($3.2.4 million) from $331.0 million ($260.7 million) in 2016, including same-store sales increases of 3.4 percent excluding the impact of foreign exchange rates.

Traffic Volume Growth Accelerates in May

May vehicle traffic growth rate 83 percent higher than April. Traffic volume up 2.2 percent for the month.

Travel volume in May continued to grow following the rebound in April after slower growth in March. The growth is continuing the trend of increased driving that has led to increasing collision repair industry volume and auto physical damage insurance claims across the U.S.

Travel for the month of May is estimated at 267.2 billion vehicle miles nationwide according to the most recent data released by the Federal Highway Administration.

May’s traffic volume represents an increase of 2.2 percent or 5.9 billion

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) yesterday released the draft report of its market study into Australia’s new car retailing industry. The report covers several issues of importance to the independent repair community, including access to technical information, parts sales restrictions and concerns over high margins for vehicle manufacturers on OEM parts sales.

UK National Body Repair Association Director Resigns

The UK-based National Body Repair Association (NBRA), a part of the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI), yesterday announced the resignation of its Director, Jason Moseley. 

The NBRA was formed following the July 2015 merger of the RMI National Association of Bodyshops (NAB) and the Vehicle Builders and Repairers Association (VBRA). The combined group represented over 70 percent of the body shop market in the UK.

Attorneys General Announce $5.5 Million Multi-State Settlement With Nationwide Insurance Over 2012 Data Breach

Attorneys General in 33 states have reached a settlement with the Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and its subsidiary, Allied Property & Casualty Insurance Company, concerning an October 2012 data breach. The data breach, which the states allege had been caused by the failure to apply a critical security patch intended to prevent hacking or viral infection, resulted in the loss of personal information belonging to 1.27 million consumers.

NASTF Executive Director Potter Retires, Successor Sought

Skip Potter, Executive Director of the National Automotive Service Task Force (NASTF) since June 2012, informed the organization’s Board of Directors earlier this month of his intent to retire, August 31, and has begun working with NASTF leadership for the transition to new management.

Bill in U.S. House Would Reform Insurance Claims Adjuster Licensing

A bill introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, Claims Licensing Advancement for Interstate Matters Act or CLAIM Act. (H. R. 3363), seeks to reform uniformity and reciprocity among states that license insurance claims adjusters.

The bill seeks to have states create uniform criteria for adjuster that licensing by establishing uniform criteria regarding the integrity, personal qualifications, education, training, and experience of licensed independent claims adjusters for) property and casualty insurance, workers compensation insurance; and a state may choose to regulate.

GEICO Premiums Written Up 16.7% in Second Quarter

Policies in force up 10 percent, premiums up five percent. Losses, however, increase faster than premiums.

Berkshire Hathaway reported results for the second quarter of 2017 including GEICO, the second largest private passenger auto insurer in the U.S.

GEICO premiums written in the second quarter were $7.27 billion, up $1 billion of 16.7 percent versus the second quarter of 2016. For the first six months of 2017 premiums written were $14.857 billion, an increase of $2.1 billion of 16.1 percent, versus the first half of 2016.
